CNS Choose Wisely Recommendations for Neurosurgeons

Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Kristen Riley is a neurosurgeon who serves as a professor at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Kristen Riley is also a member of several professional organizations, including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS).

The organization, which is one of the largest neurosurgeon advocacy groups in the country, recently released a new entry into its ‘Choose Wisely’ series, with the CNS highlighting a variety of procedures and tests that are often performed needlessly and may occasionally pose a risk to patients.

According to CNS, steroids should never be administered to a patient who is suffering from a traumatic brain injury. Additionally, physicians should not obtain routine CT scans for children who only present with mild head injuries. Alongside this, the organization insists that imaging exams shouldn’t be taken of a patient’s spine when they’re suffering from acute low back pain unless red flags present themselves.
